Privacy Policy

I Was Here (operated under The Fletching, "we," "us," "our") helps you and your family write letters, record interviews, and save photos and videos in a private vault, with the option to turn a story into a printed keepsake, a finished video, or a story shared in our public archive. This page explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

Account information. When you create an account, we collect the email address you sign in with. We don't require your name, address, or phone number to use the site.

The content you create. Letters, interview answers, audio and video recordings, and photos you save to your vault — along with anything you submit through Tell Your Story for our public archive. This is the heart of the service, and it's yours; see "Your content" below.

Payment information. If you purchase a membership, a video order, or a public archive submission, your payment is handled directly by Stripe, our payment processor. We never see or store your full card number — Stripe shares with us only what's needed to confirm and manage your order, like the last four digits and whether the charge succeeded.

Information sent to help generate interview questions. If you use a guided text interview, your answers are sent to Anthropic's Claude API (server-side, never exposed in your browser) so the next question can follow naturally from what you've already shared. That exchange is used only to generate your next prompt — it isn't used to train any AI model.

How we use your information

We use what we collect to run the service: to save and show you your own vault, to process payments and send receipts, to generate guided interview questions, to review and (with your permission) publish Tell Your Story submissions, and to reach you about your account or order if something needs your attention. We don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising.

Who we share it with

We rely on a small number of service providers to run I Was Here, and we share only what each one needs to do its job:

• Supabase — our database, file storage, and sign-in provider. Your vault content and account record live here.
• Stripe — processes payments for memberships, video orders, and public archive submissions.
• Resend — sends transactional email, like order confirmations and notifications.
• Anthropic — generates follow-up questions during guided text interviews, as described above.
• Netlify — hosts the website itself.

We don't share your information with anyone else, except if required by law or to protect the safety of our users.

Your content

What you write, record, or upload to your vault stays private to your account unless you choose to share it — for example, by inviting a family member to your circle, or by submitting a story to our public archive through Tell Your Story. Public archive submissions are reviewed by us before anything is published, and only the display name, title, and story you chose to submit are made public. You're responsible for making sure you have the right to share any photos, recordings, or stories that include other people.

Cookies and tracking

We use only the essential cookie that keeps you signed in. We don't run advertising trackers or third-party analytics on the site.

Children's privacy

I Was Here is intended for adults preserving their own stories or their family's. We don't knowingly collect information directly from children under 13. If a family wants to preserve a child's story or memory, that's done through an adult's account.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your account and vault content for as long as your account is active. If you'd like your account and data deleted, email us at info@iwashereapp.com and we'll take care of it.

Security

Your content is stored in private storage that only your account can access, and data is encrypted in transit. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.

Changes to this policy

If we make a meaningful change to how we handle your information, we'll update this page and change the date at the top.
